I'm currently reading "Ines of my Soul" by Isabel Allende. I like it a lot. It is a historical novel about Ines who was one of the conquerers that founded Chili (if I'm not mistaken).
Apart from that I can also highly recommend all novels of Ben Elton (I've already read Popcorn, Dead Famous, First Casualty and High Society). His novels are serious and funny at the same time.

I just got done reading this book called "Murder of a small town". Unfortunately I can't remember the authors name, but it was a great true crime book. All the more so, because it happened in my own home town!
