Is there any other spot on the motorcycle to check other than the fork? The numbers there aren't all readable. I have no title to work off of. What other place on the bike, if any, can I find them?

Sorry, its a 1982 yamaha 400 special street bike, xs 400 I beleive. I'll check the motor.

I called the yamaha 800 number as per guardrailjim's answer and talked to very nice lady (Kim) and I need to call back after the 4th and a tech can tell me everything I need to know about the bike from the number off the motor, even if its stolen! Thanks guardrailjim!

That's the only location for the VIN#
There is a chemical that law enforcement use to retrieve filed down #s on bikes and firearms (guns).
If you don't want to bother the police (or waste your time LOL), call Yamaha with the engine #.
It'll be located on the top half of the crankcase on a 1/2" x 2" flat surface.
Usually near the clutch cover (right side cover).

Before 1966 a VIN was not required. HD only used a motor number and no frame number. Triumph stamped last four digits on everything. (early HD VIN specified a year but early Honda did not) Most later model bikes have the VIN on the steering head, however some bikes (esp BMW) have VIN located on bottom of frame near right cyl. If bike was a builder it may have a VIN tag (State issued ID #) on down tube.
