Linux is an Open Source Operating System. Windows is a Closed Source Operating System.
Open Source means that anyone capable can edit the code of the OS. Closed source OSes do not allow people to see their code.
Linus Torvalds (the Originator of Linux) likes Penguins a LOT! LOL! So he chose a Penguin to be the mascot for Linux. That Penguin's name is TUX.
See:
http://www.linux.org for a complete explanation of the history of Linux, what it is and how to implement it.

the penguin is named "tux" and he is the linux mascot...but anyway...linux is a base for an operating system...it is open source thus making it free. there are many different kinds of linux based operating systems. anything from ubuntu to mandriva to suse to linspire. they are all based on the linux "kernel". so basicly it is an alternative kind of operating system from windows or mac os x
