I need to write an essay. It has to be about courage. Such as a handicapped, a firefighter, or something like that. But I want this essay to stand out. I need some ideas on a type of person to write about. I am a good writere but I have just hit a mental block I guess. Thanks.

You could also write about parents. It takes a lot of courage to take responsibility for a human life. Or the doctors in Doctors without Borders, who go to war and disease torn countries to provide free medical care to those who need it. Or even someone like Harriet Tubman, or the four college students from South Carolina who basically started the Civil Rights movement with a sit in at a lunch counter, or the Little Rock Nine. Courage means different things to different people, but mostly they think of things like firefighters or people who are disabled. Try to find someone who was brave for a nobler reason than the fact that it was their job, or they were born different or had an accident. Not that that's not courage, but every day people CHOOSE to be brave because it's the right thing to do, not because of those other reasons.

Oooh...you could write about the Afgani girl who competed in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens for swimming when people were threatening her and her family with torture and death.

if you want your essay to stand out, you have to think outside the box a little bit. write about courage from a different perspective. courage doesnt have to be a story about some strong people saving other people, it can be about the courage to donate your organ to other people for example.

or about someone that has a stage fright and suddenly that person become the star of a play, that is courage. think about the simple, courageous things that people can do in everyday life so that everyone can relate to that story.

all the best!

Read about Audie Murphy, the most heavily decorated soldier of World War II. Do a Google search for winners of the Congressional Medal of Honor and why any soldier who encounters such a winner snaps to attention and salutes him. Read about what each recipient did to deserve it, or this Generation's Private Jessica Lynch and what she did to be decorated with two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star at 22 years old.

I think that you should write about The Holocaust because that is where alot of people showed courage and survived the maltreatment of the Nazis Its very heartbreaking to hear all the things that these people had to go through. If you choose to do this topic and you live in NYC you should visit the Jewish Heritage Museum in Manhattan. You should google it for the address
Hope I Helped!!!!!!!!!

I'd suggest Gladys Alward.

Here is a brief mention of some of what her life included:

"Over the next twenty years, Gladys preached the gospel to thousands of Chinese men and women, tended to hundreds of wounded soldiers during the war, single-handedly stopped a deadly riot at a men’s prison, cared for the sick and lepers, and adopted over 100 orphans, often going without food so that they could survive. During the Japanese invasion, she was on the “dead or alive most wanted list” and often narrowly escaped pursuers seeking to end her life – her clothing riddled with bullet holes. She led 200 orphans on a 6-week journey across the mountains to bring them to safety; a journey so exhausting that she lasped into a coma as soon as the task was completed."

I expect there are a number of books on her life. One you could try is "Gladys Aylward - The Little Woman" by Gladys Aylward and Christine Hunter.

Guess you could write about people in Somalia who have trouble getting even 1 meal a day and have dacoits looting their food but still have smiles on their faces.
