Let's say you've written your first book (sci-fi, fiction) and you would like to send you manuscript to a publisher for consideration. What publishers are open to new writers.

If you're a writer and have a book published (even a children's book), what did you do?

It really is best to find a literary agent. They will represent you to the various publishers, know which ones are best to go to for the work you've done, and watch out for your rights.

Almost all publishers will reject a manuscript out of hand that isn't represented by a literary agent. This is so they cannot be accused of stealing your work if they reject it, and then publish something just like it later.

Everyone is giving great advise and most publishers will not accept unsolicited work. Some publishing houses will accept manuscripts but if you just mail it to them unsolicited, meaning you spoke to a particular person at that publisher before mailing it they will toss it or mail it back unopened. Also finding a literary agent that wants to read your work and try to get it published is just as tough as a publisher. If they don't think your story is good they won't accept it.

Be prepared for a lot of reject letters. AND make sure YOU copyright your manuscript before you start mailing it out. And don't forget to have someone edit it for you. Don't edit it yourself have someone else do it.

Good luck and enjoy the journey.

Ditto. Get a guide to literary agents and blanket mail them. The only agencies that will accept unsolicited manuscripts are usually very small with almost no distribution.

And NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER- NEVER pay a publisher to publish your book or more than a few dollars as a reader's fee. This is a popular con. Legitimate publishers and legitimate agents usually do not charge at all and if they do it's usually only nominal (a few dollars) to cover expenses of mailing and copying and the like.

I echo Gromit801's advise. Major publishing houses have no time and energy for unpublished authors. The best option is to secure a literary agent and they can be found in the current issue of Writer's Market.

Make sure the agency you select to receive your query letter will accept the type genre of your manuscript.

If you've got a GREAT sci fi novel, send it to Tor. But first, read these guidelines:
