I collect cookbooks from different places that I visit. My husband was just in New Orleans and he brought back one for me. The books are fun to look through and you can learn a lot about an area from the food they eat. They're great if you like to cook different things.
We also collect postcards because they are inexpensive and fun to look at later. I mount them in a scrapbook.
My older son collects key chains. Like someone already mentioned, they are inexpensive and you can find them anywhere.
My younger son collects snow globes and small models of buildings from the places we visit. He has things like the Empire State Building, Independence Hall, etc. It is a little more expensive than the key chains but we don't buy as many of them. I think the most we ever paid for one was about $25.00.
The non-travel related things that I collect are books. I usually go for old children's books, first editions, autographed copies and classics. I get them at yard sales, auctions, and in second hand book shops. I think the most I ever paid was $35.00. Most cost between $2.00 and $5.00.

People just collect things. They like to. There are people who collect some very odd things. I thought that barbed wire was a strange thing to collect, but apparently there are many kinds of barbed wire.
I have no idea what is currently popular to collect, but kids often collect things because other kids do and they want to connect with each other.

I collect bells. My family also gives me bells for special occassiona. I have paid up to 15 dollors for some of them. When I travel to new places I buy a bell. I have a lot from different states. I like my christmas ones the best. The colors are beautiful and so are the scenes.

I don't think you should follow what people collect and start collecting it too.Part of a collection is to collect something you like.
I like to collect coins or paper money from all over the world.Sometimes people give them to me and sometimes I just find them in my change or lying around somewhere.I also collect jade bracelets I got from my visit to Vietnam.
I don't like to really use money to buy my collection, so I mostly just let my collection grow on their own...

I find that the Tamagotchi craze is sweeping generations new and old alike. They aren't just good for one to just play, but they are for collecting too! They come in all sorts of styles and colors. My daughter and her friends have one at least and some others I have met have up to 20! It's fun for children as well as adults (my wife has one)......and no I don't sell them, lol.
