when a king has a son is it more customary to name them after a previous King or to give them a unique name of their own. For example when Charles was born he was given the name of a past King as he would be one himself one day but Andrew is not a King name as he probably never will be King.

Hope not too confusing for you all!

The simple answer is that a King may use any name he chooses. It is a TRADITION and not a requirement that familiar family-held names are used, but they are not passed down.Andrew will not be King because he is not the heir to the throne;Andrew was the second son and always knew that he would be knocked down a line or two in succession as Charles had children.Names have absolutely nothing to do with becoming king;birth-order does!
His Royal Highness Prince Charles Philip Arthur George can use any of his names that he wants to be known by;one day he may call himself King Arthur,or King Philip!

And to correct an answer :Edward VIII's "real" name was Edward Albert Patrick David;he was known as "David" by his family.

when a man becomes king, he can take any name he wants. for instance, King Edward VIII's real name was David. Charles can be King Charles III if he wants, but with the history -- both King Charles I and II were executed -- he probably won't.

Charles' full name is Charles Philip Arthur George. Philip for his father; Arthur for his great-uncle, George for his grandfather.

Andrew is named after the patron saint of Scotland, a nod to his grandmother Elizabeth's Scottish roots.

But royal names do tend be rather traditional and usually honoring a family member or ancestor. and the monarch has the final approval for a royal baby name. Andrew and Fergie wanted to name heir firstborn Annabelle, but the queen nixed it because it was "too trendy."
she was instead named Beatrice for one of the daughters of queen vctoria.

Charles has four names, Charles Philip Arthur George. His grandfather, King George VI, had the first name of Albert (after Victoria's husband) but used one of his other names, George, when he became king. It is likely that Charles will be George VII.

There have been various monarchs whose name has occurred once, Stephen, John, Anne and Victoria (and Philip if you accept Mary I's husband as king regnant as she wanted). It is probable, however, that should Charles, William and Harry die, Andrew would use one of his other names when he became king.

George VII is what Charles wishes to be known as.
Humpty Dumpty was written about crazy King George III (the one who failed to beat the American Revolution).
I think for Charles that Humpty Dumpty II would be far more modern.

I would imagine that it is up to the royal family but they can be remarkably inept when it comes to names.Queen Elizabeth is known as Elizabeth the Second but the Scots don´t recognize her as such because Elizabeth the First(a great queen)was not Queen of Scotland.

And another correction - Charles II was not executed, he died peacefully in his own bed, apologizing to the courtiers around him for taking so long to die.
