One way is to look at the denominator of a fraction, e.g. 8. Since it is smaller than 10, each eighth must be larger than 0.1. So 3 and 3/8 must be larger than 3.3.

By the same token, since 8 is larger than 5, each eighth must be smaller than 0.2. So 3 and 3/8 must be larger than 3.3 and smaller than 3.4. Since 8 is about halfway between 5 and 10, it follows 3 3/8 must be about halfway between 3.3 and 3.4, or 3.35. Since 8 is actually a bit larger than the halfway mark of 7.5, the result is actually a bit larger than 3.35. Call is 3.36 or 3.37. Pretty close to the actual number

You get the idea.

3 Whole

3/8 - Look at the relationship: Numerator to Denominator

4/8 (1/2) of 8 is 4 - that tells us it is smaller then half

2/8 (1/4) of 8 is 2 - that tells us it is bigger then a quarter
