You do not need an agent ; however, you do need an Actor's Equity card. All of the Broadway houses are Union houses, so you won't be getting in the door without showing one of those at the sign-up. The quickest way to get an Equity card is to get a job with a theatre that has an Equity Membershp Candidacy program in place. For every week you work there (after paying your $100 and filling out the forms), you'll receive 1 point. At 50 points, you can get your card.

New York Actors do not have portfolios (models have portfolios NOT ACTORS).

You need two things to audition in NYC a headshot and your acting resume. Hopefully your resume will have a lot of leading roles on it.

No you don't. It helps in salary negotiations but then again you don't have to split your money. Give it a shot and remember it is supposed to be fun. The ones who get the jobs are relaxed and project energy and enthusiasm.
