I know it's California, but still, it does seem to be a bit over the top. And how can he prove his child is even mine.

Are you male or female? That IS very important to knowing what you are talking about. Is he claiming you are the father of his wife's child, of that he is the father of your child? In either case, DNA would be how he proved his claim. If he can convince the Judge there is reason to believe his claim, a DNA test will be ordered by the court.

DNA. I think this guy might be trying to scare you into doing something that he wants you to do. Challenge him to provide proof. While you are at it, file against him to allow you what is needed for DNA testing to be performed. If he refuses, then see an attorney for what legal action you can bring against him for his actions, or threats against you. What he is doing, if this is truly the case, is illegal, if he can not show evidence that his claim is valid. Give him a good "Bronx cheer" and tell him to prove it, or you'll sue him for harassment.

The only way I think this might even be possible is if he thinks he had a kid with your wife and then realized the kid has your dna, he wants you to pay for his inconvenience.
