I hope you are not the pregnant one. Are you asking when does the baby starts to receive nutrients through the umbilical cord?

What they are trying to explain is that the umbilical cord is a tube which goes from the placenta(a big flat thing that grows on the side of the uterus and connects to the mother's blood supply) to the baby's stomach at the place where the navel will be. The mother's blood circulates through this tube, through the baby, and back. This is how the baby gets its oxygen, food, etc., but it's not the same as eating. A baby doesn't actually eat until after it is born, though it does start drinking at a later stage in pregnancy.

LOL. I also had a mental picture of a fetus gnawing on the cord. Umm, the baby starts getting nutrients as soon as it is concieved. The cord is probably formed when it goes from being a zygote into an embryo (from a ball of cells into a small peanut size baby).
It is actually a pretty good question though... if it was worded differently.

Are you talking about when an embryo starts getting nourishment through the placenta by way of that umbilical cord? That is within the first month. Earlier than that I believe that the group of cells are just embedded in the wall and gets enough nourishment through that contact. When its needs for oxygen, waste removal, and nourishment outgrow that primitive connection then the cells are attached to a stalk that will become the umbilical cord.

Are you talking about the umbilical cord? The baby doesn't eat off it. What the umbilical cord does is connect the placenta with the fetus, and nourishment from the placenta flows through the umbilical cord. This begins as soon as the fertilized egg implants itself in the uterus wall

It never starts eating "off" your cord!! The umbilical cord is used to transport nutrients from mother to fetus. Also, the cord does not belong to the mother. It belongs to the baby.
