You could if the conditions were right and you've been trained to know the difference. I don't think anyone expects a fireman to give up his life for another, but firemen are trained well and they observe the structures as they burn and can pretty well tell how long they're going to hold. So, yes, I think they can run into a burning building and come out alive as well as save someone's life. It's happened before.

If I were a fireman, of course.

If there were people at risk, I would too.

I can't imagine any man or woman that would allow people to burn to death with out attempting to help. Sure, you may be putting yourself in harms way. Sure you may die.

I know there are many people that would simply stand back and watch. Walk away and live their lives.

But if it were me, how could I ever sleep again. I would hear the screams of the victims every night. I would chastise my self for the rest of my life for my lack of courage.

And would that be a life worth living? No. Better to risk than to be shamed forever.

Now if it were simply a structure fire, with no risk to anybody, I would stand back.

If I was a fireman I could - thank god I am not a fireman.

Seriously though, can you get into a car and drive knowing that you might crash and die or hurt yourself? I would think in the long term that is equally dangerous, but people do it without hesitation every day

Yes, you call it personal sacrifice for the sake of others. That's why firemen have brotherhoods, if youo die in the line of duty, you are not forgotten.

My husband does it all the time. That's why I have a lot of respect for him. I am proud to be a firefighter's wife.
