.....What you have is an ingrained behavior pattern. Various situations serve as "triggers" to your drinking behavior...social gatherings, entertainment, celebrations, etc. The behavior leads to a pleasurable feeling, and the drinks probably taste good, too. So now it's an addiction, and there are seriously negative relationship and health effects. The only way to change this is a major holistic assault to introduce new behavior patterns. While it's going to be easier to start now before the addiction gets worse, most people can't muster up the motivation to make all the changes.....until they hit bottom.
If it's your intention to change this, I wish you good luck. Millions have done it before you.

Check your family tree. Just because your peeps don't drink, doesn't mean it's not genetic. Alcoholism can skip 2-3 generations.
The fact that you are aware of it is a positive sign. Your in a position to do something about it. There are millions that are still in denial about the problem they have.
You can find support and help groups all over the world, including the internet. Talk to a counselor before it takes your life over. It sounds like you have a lot to lose, so lose the bad habit before you lose any of the good things.
Good luck, I hope you find your way.

It sounds like you are either bored with your life (no real challenge or adventure taking place) or you are trying to medicate some type of pain. Are you under stress? Are you drinking to "check out" from life for a bit. I know I'll do that when I feel like I need a break.

there is nothing wrong with drinking. Its only when you start to grow dependent on it and it starts to affect other parts of your life that it becomes a problem. If this is the case then you should considering counseling to an figure out what is going on.

Like any other drug, some people are more susceptible to the effects and can/do become addicted. The first step toward fixing the problem is admitting that you have a problem (which you have just done). I'd encourage you to attend a local Alcoholics Anonymous.

BEAR... Are you drunk now?
You could be worrying about things too much and by drinking you could be trying to forget your worries.

You like to drink because you like the way it makes you feel.

Some people's brains are wired toward excess, and it sounds like you are one of them.
I have an addictive personality myself....sure wish I could beat my OWN alcohol abuse.
