My husband and I are trying to find a porch idea for our brick ranch home. We don't want a deck and would like something different than the traditional concrete. We have looked at do-it-yourself books, but none of them talk about building a porch with stones. We don't know if it is possible or if it is something that will be outrageously expensive. Anyone have any ideas??

That's a really hard question to answer, since I'm not sure what you mean by a stone porch. In other words, are you talking about building the entire porch out of stone, stacked up how high, or are you going to build a frame and just use stones for the walking surface, etc. You might check out some of the home improvement stores, since a lot of them can give you information on design and construction. Then you'll just have to decide whether the effort and hassle is worth the savings or if you'll be happier with the result if you have it built by experts.

Just google "stone porch" and you'll come up with a number of web sites that provide instructions on how to do it yourself....such as this one

You can also find places where you can purchase materials.

Good point - People who refuse to live by grace, through faith... God gives them over to their selfish desires. The OT describes how people actually were, back then, warts and all. God's chosen people were no less prone to sin than the pagans around them, which was why God gave them his perfect law. It was to show the huge difference between polytheists and those who worshipped only their creator. When Israel broke God's laws, they disgraced their creator and the nations around them mocked, especially when God allowed disaster to befall Israel, as his covenant terms and conditions stated he would do. Yet that old covenant was full of grace! God was full of grace towards even covenant-breakers! Jesus did not correct any of the OT. He exemplified it perfectly. Time and again he showed up the error of people interpreting God's laws wrongly. As it was in the OT, so it was in Jesus' day and our day - those who stubbornly stick to their corrupt hearts' desires (even though they might call themselves Christians) will find a great distance between themselves and God, who withdraws from those whose hearts are not humble and sincere. The freedom for which Christ died is the happy portion of those who desire to do God's will.

I'm sure if the cavemen could build Stonehenge all those years ago , you shouldn't have any problem doing a porch .
