I want to learn the guitar. I'm looking at guitars and prices but I'm completely clueless. I just want something good that I can learn on.

Start with an accoustic. If you're just learning, there's no need to get anything expensive. You can get a decent Yamaha or Samick accoustic for less than 150, which should be fine for learning. Later if you decide you want to continue with the guitar, upgrade to an electric.

Another idea is to rent something. Most music stores will offer rentals for a relatively low price. This way, if you decide you don't like playing the guitar, you're not stuck with a guitar that you'll never use.

Probably electric, because the strings are easier to hold down. Acoustic is usually cheaper though. You can get a Acoustic guitar from Guitar Center for $99 which includes a strap and learning guides. I don't recommend you get anything from Wal Mart (First Act guitars are horrible and heavy) If you want an electric guitar a starter kit from Guitar Center is about $150 which includes a small amplifier.

It really depends on your preference and price range, whether you like acoustic, classical, or electric. I think it is more important what kind of strings you get than what kind of guitar. When you're first starting out, get "soft" strings. Otherwise you may get discouraged by the bruised fingers until you build up your fingertips. You need to practice a lot to get good at it, and your fingers will wear out faster than you can learn, at first. Different softness of the strings will give you a different sound, with the harder strings having a clearer tone, so when you are able you will probably want to move up to harder strings.

Even factory-made guitars are hand-crafted and thoroughly examined, and I have never met a craftsman who wasn't obsessively proud of his work. It would be hard to go wrong, no matter what you select. Simply pluck a few strings and see if you like the sound.

I would go with an acoustic electric. I would go with either a Epiphone AJ100CE- Acoustic Electric-Guitar or a Epiphone AJ-200SCE Acoustic-Electric Guitar. Go to http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitar/navigation/acoustic-electric-guitars?N=100001+306251. That the best place to get anything instrumental and more.

Buy the cheapest acoustic one. It will suffice to learn the notes/tabs etc.
If you change your mind you're not out much. If/when you learn, then consider a quality guitar.
