Ender's Game series (4 books) by Orson Scott Card

Ender is a third child, born in the future, when population restrictions only allow 2 children per family. But he was allowed to be born legally because of his extreme intelligence. Aliens had attacked the earth, almost destroying it, but the world was saved by one very intelligent and cunning commander. Ender was allowed to be born, because the government finds and trains very young children to become commanders, so that when the aliens attack again, Earth will not be destroyed.

At the age of 5, Ender is taken from his family to an orbiting space station, known as Battle School. The book is about his constant struggles finding his place among the other students, as the most likely boy to become the commander that will save the world.

Ender's Game is character-driven, like Harry Potter. The author, Orson Scott Card, is a Harry Potter fan, too, and even contributed to the book "The Great Snape Debate"

There is also a parallel book, called Ender's Shadow, that is the exact same story, but from another child's point of view. Both Ender's Shadow and Ender's Game can stand alone, but reading both makes each of them that much richer.

I hope you enjoy Ender's Game if you choose it! :)

If you have read the Lord of the Rings series than you can read anything out there. You will probably like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, Ann McCaffery's Pern books, you can try Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books, David Eddings and Raymond E Feist and Tad Williams (he writes mostly trilogies but he has three or four trilogies out). Ask the sci-fi/fantasy person at your local bookstore or library for more suggestions.

Try David Eddings, first there is the Bellgariad series and then the Mallorean, they have the same characters in them, I think you will like them, they are adventurous and amusing. He has lots of books out so he would keep you busy for a while. Then try Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.
Tad Williams is great, the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series is about a young guy and very well written. Tad Williams also has the Otherworld series which is sci fi and sort of Matrix like, it takes in another reality world that exists on computers and in exotic places like South Africa here on Earth. The characters are well done and the books are really good.
Mercedes Lackey also has great series and a lot of books out and they are also character driven.
I have read all of these and enjoyed them.

David B. Coe has several series
Ted Dekker has many series
Jean Auel has 4 books out and I can't remember the titles but they are long books
Edgar Rice Burroughs has the John Carter of Mars series and it is an oldie but a goodie ( he wrote the Tarzan books)
Ray Bradbury has the Martian Chronicles

I like the Dragonriders of Pern series (Anne Mccaffrey) it's sci fi/fantasy and it has about 20 books in it, but it's a little confusing because she doesn't write the books in the order the events happen.
Wikipedia.org has a lot more about it and the order of the books

I love the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. It starts with On A Pale Horse. I also like Anthony's Adept series. It starts with Split Infinity. Neither of them are about children, but they're easy to understand, and they both have magic and technology.
