I have a 99 Honda Accord. I don't drive it too often. I bought it new and have had it 8 years and it has 51,000 kilometres on it (equivalent of 31,689 miles).

Last week when I turned it on, it made the sort of noise cars make when they aren't going to start, however it did start and I only used it for a short trip with no trouble. I haven't driven it for a week and went out today to turn it on and it won't start at all. There is no power to the car. The doors wouldn't even lock.

Any suggestions as to what may be the problem? I've had no problems with the car up until now. Thanks.

If the battery is dead would it be okay to get a jump start or would I need to purchase a new battery? Thanks.

It sounds like the battery is run down. It may be that you have not run it enough to keep the battery charged, or the charging circuit is faulty, or the battery is unable to hold a charge and needs replacement.

At 8 years of age, if it is the original battery, it may be unable to hold a charge.

It is fine to use a jumper cable to start it provide you do it properly. CAUTION! improper jumper cable use can cause serious problems including battery explosion so be sure to follow proper precautions.

You can also use a battery charger to charge the battery. If you have a friend who would lend you one, charge it overnight and see if the car will start.

If you start it with a jumper cable, drive the car for a while as this will run the battery up. See if it holds the charge overnight.

If the battery will not hold a charge, replacement is required. Most respectable dealers will also check your charging circuit at battery install time because they don't want the battery to fail from a bad charging circuit. You want them to do a charging circuit test.

It sounds like your battery is dead. A new one for a 99 accord should run you about 40-60US dollars. I reccomend one of the Excide gel cell batteries, and it's always a good idea to get more cold cranking capacity than you actually need, that way if it's really cold, getting older, or you're trying to jump start another car, it's never a problem.

the switch on the clutch pedal is not working properly, this switch stops you from starting car if clutch is not pushed down. also if you have thick floor mats up under pedal this will also stop the switch from working, pedal must be able to go all the way to floor. honda tech 12yrs. yes the main relay is probably the hot weather issue but it does not stop engine from cranking it just shuts down ignition spark
