We can grow our hair long without straightening, it grows better when not straightened anyhow. But if the hair is kept in natural state it becomes difficult to care for. But braids are a good way to keep it natural so it flows. But not all women prefer that style.

Black women CAN grow long hair, it's just that many of us slap chemicals, and weaves, and products in our hair that damage it. Chemical relaxers and glue in extentions are the biggest cullprits in my opinion. They break the hair off resulting in what appears to be slow hair growth. Other than this, there is virtually no difference between black people's hair and other's hair.
More and more black women are deciding to go natural as a result of this and are finding their hair to be strong, healther, and longer. If more black women did this instead of putting harsh chemicals on it, then they will find that their hair will grow long and not break off all the time because of chemical relaxers.
When it comes to very curly/kinky/coily hair (what the majority of black women naturally have), the hair will appear shorter, and that is because of it's curliness. Think of our hair as a slinky, it's coily but when stretched it's very long. It's drawn up, so the true legnth isn't shown, but if you were to stretch it out, you will find it to be just as long, probably longer than alot of caucasian hair.
Also, if you do decide to wear chemical relaxers, one must know the proper way to apply it, and most people don't which is why it looks short and dry all the time.

they can grow their hair without straightening it. Media has been an influence on black women straightening their hair. Few black women want to keep it natural also because of pain wen combing it, but dreads don't need to be combed, but not everyone wants dreads.

What is with all the "black women" questions? Did you get dumped for one? Our hair grows long, but the curls are so tight you have to straighten it to see the length. Stop generalizng and use the common sense that God gave you!

I don't know where you are from but you obviously haven't been exposed to many "black women", take a look at my pic, I have long, naturally curly ( not nappy) hair, but sometime i like to wear it straight so I straighten it, just like caucasian women who have straight hair and want to make it curly! You would never know how long my hair is unless you know me personally because I rarely wear it down, so please sweetheart, before you assume next time do a little more research, you might learn a couple things.

Well I'm black and my hair grows, it can't turn into an afro because my hair is more on the wavy/curl side because of my mixed family. Black women's hair can grow though if they know how to take care of it.

It does grow long, but it doesn't appear that way because it's very tightly curled. If you were to stretch out the hair and relax the curl, you'd find it grows just fine.
It is true that it grows much better if it isn't straightened.
And there isn't any need for posters to insult rural people on here (the one who said "dumb country hick.") I'm originally from a rural area, and I don't think that way. It's very offensive to me and others.

We can grow our hair long w/o straighten it, it depends on what type of hair you have. Some of use have fine hair, some coarse, some are textured, thats why we use relaxers to smooth out the waves.

Actually black womens hair can grow longer than whites. We have been brainwashed to try & straigten our hair to look like white womens thus damaging our natural hair. If a black woman were to let their hair grow in its natural texture it would be down her back.
Look at ppl who have locks...alot of Jamaicans wear their hair this way & it is extremely long.

the hair texture will make it grown out like the girl said like an afro. now if corporation thought this hair style wasd acceptable, you will see more black women with natural. sadly, our society still has a lot of work to do of accepting differences in otuer races. its also a conformity thing. because the mainstream of hairstyles are flat, straight styles, id nlk women wore thei hair natural, they may fele uncomfortable, therefore conform w/o even realising they have adapted to society's idealism of beauty.
