Some boat have air chambers called flotation chambers filled with foam.So if they take on water they will float on the surface. Large boat don't have this as the displacement is so large.Hope this helps.Don't know about your canoe as the water is best to keep outside.

?? Ships do not have 'air chambers' for floatation purposes. I do not think i have ever seen a 'cannoe' with holes in the bottom where water enters?
PS - it is spelled C A N O E, CANOE

Ships and boats do not have "air chambers" to float (excluding inflatable rafts). They all float because they displace more water then they weigh. However, many ships and boats do have watertight compartments to stay afloat if they take on water due to storms, collisions, etc.
