I help others because I want to make them happy, make life a bit easier for them, or whatever. I would say it's probably about 99% selfless on my part...I do enjoy the feeling I get from helping people out, but that's not the driving force behind why I do it.

Sometimes it's like a reflex, like if you see a little kid fall you try to catch them or at least go to help them.. thats selfless caz you don't have time to think about it but you do it anyway. Other things that are planned or thought about in advance arn't usually so selfless, we have other reasons for doing those things but they are still good deads because you still had the intent of helping others.

I would like to say that it is a completely selfless act, but it also makes me feel good.

Giving makes you feel good, period. If it doesn't you don't have much to give. If you mean by self the ego, then, yeh, you should dump that probably instead of proping up a dead horse. As a manipulative tool to get something, not so good. But you feel good when you want to give it. Selfless doesn't sound right. Your not supposed to hurt yourself somehow to be good. It's out of you abundance. Elvis gave his friends cars. I don't think he was trying to buy friend, he loved them and that feels good. It's a gift to both of you and you can't not give it. If it's without love it's poison your giving, like to feel superior. Maybe that's what you mean. I thought altruism was kind of disproved. Even if you give an organ to a friend, it's not for a principle, but for you friend or love for humanity. You don't love people because it's a rule but because it makes you happy. I guess if you have no feeling then it's only rule until you see the smile on their face. What if they spit in your face. Your relatively indifferent as you had no strings attacted. You weren't trying to feel good about yourself, you already felt good about yourself. If they don't appreciate it you feel bad for them, not for you. Kind of along those line. Hey, you all have sharper minds than me. You tell me.

Selfless. act. I do not expect anything in return. I only wish the safety & well being for the other person. I would give someone the shirt of my back in return for a smile & the reasssurance that the other is warm....food to eat...safe..made to feel their life is important as you & I. That's what life is all about.....Love thy Neighbor

It kind of depends on the situation. If my sister needed my help I'd do it in order to make HER happy, yet I know I'll be thanked.
If I see an elderly person walking out a door a few steps behind me, I'll stand holding the door open til they get out. Yes I'm doing it because I'm being polite and I have manners, but I must admist....it gripes me when they can't say a simple 'thank you!'
But, if I give someone a gift that I've bought for them....I just want to see the happiness on their face. I want them to be excited. And in that way it makes me feel good that I made them smile or made their day. So I guess I do it for BOTH reasons.

Im always willing to help people but I think how I would feel about it would depend on my mood. Lets say Im in a good mood it would be selfless a bad mood would make me feel good about myself. Either way I would still help.

I don't believe there is any such thing as a selfless act, but that doesn't take the good out of anything one person does for another.
There are rewards or punishments for everything we do. People who are charitable tend to care more about the emotional reward they get from helping other people. People who aren't as charitable tend to care more about material rewards life has to offer.

Both... But I say what difference does it make.. It's not like you're going up to that person you're helping and saying "this isn't for you, it's for me"... What's wrong with both of you walking away feeling good???
The question is would it be better if you helped someone and felt bad or regretful about it?
We're all human which means we're emotional beings and it's impossible for us to do ANYTHING without having some sort of feeling about it.
