I am new to following politics, but am curious what are conservative values. From what I understand, conservative is less government, less spending, diplomacy before war, no abortion, etc. Bush exhibits only one of these. I am not sure if I am repub or democrat so can someone explain what makes Pres Bush a conservative? Everything I know about conservatism I have heard on the Sean Hannity radio show.

sean hannity is to extreme to be learning from , his show is for entertainment . Sure his views are conservative but his main thing is attacking dems , he reminds me of an extreme liberal that simply disagrees with a conservative regardless what they have to say

if you are not sure that means you are independent and decide your opinions issue by issue , don't let a party decide for you
and no bush is not a conservative , a conservative would have never supported that immagration bill and would simply enforce the laws we have now

Bush is a conservative on some things but very liberal minded on other things. I am a conservative, and I don't like a lot of the things he has done lately. I think there are a lot of conservatives who feel the same way. However, on yahoo politics all conservatives get labeled as Bush followers. That is just not the truth. It is better to keep an open mind and research issues.

What does conservative mean, anyway? Originally it refered to monarchists and other aristocrats who opposed democracy, later it became anti-NewDeal and quite libertarian. These days, who knows what it means, it seems to imply a sort of pro-US "right or wrong" imperialism, protectionism, and religiously inspired social regulation.

Socially, he is quite the authoritarian.

Economically, he is no conservative - although the meaning of this term "economic conservative" is due to be eliminated from the dictionary since the free-marketeers have been abandoning the Republican party in record numbers.

In my opinion, Bush brought the whole debate a little bit left on spending issues and way up on the authoritarian scale.

nope. no truly conservative president would not have started an elective war on false premise, would not have put our Nation BILLIONS of dollars in debt to communist China, would not have sanctioned warrentless surveillance on American citizens, would not have outsource most of our military services to private corporations and certainly would not have done away with Habeous Corpus.

Bush is a PNAC puppet, a marionette that dances on the strings of mega corporations

bush isn't liberal on anything, he's been opposed to individual rights on many issues and has continued to expand the federal government, he's about as un-liberal as you can get
