First and foremost because it was seen as cruel and unusual punishment which is unconstitutional.
"On August 14, 1936, Rainey Bethea was hanged in Owensboro, Kentucky, before a crowd of 20,000. The public outrage which followed resulted in the complete abolition of public executions in the United States. "-Perry T. Ryan.
After this all the states banned public executions. To date, the U.S. Supreme Court has not ruled on the issue of public execution.
In 1972, the Supreme Court ruled in Furman vs. Georgia that the death penalty was unconstitutional due to the lack of uniform standards for the application of the death penalty.
The states then revised their death penalty statutes. And in 1976, the Supreme Court ruled in Gregg vs. Georgia that under the new standards, the death penalty was constitutional.
The latest ruling by the Supreme Court concerning the death penalty was in 2005, when the Supreme Court ruled in Roper vs. Simmons that the execution of juvenile offenders was unconstitutional.

Because people would probably sue for emotional distress these days.
Also an execution is meant to be humane (i don't get it either) and it is considered humiliating to be executed in front of a public audience, more like a ghoulish spectacle
