This is all I really want to say here... I have answered this question in detail several times but all I want to say here (and this is not directed at the asker) DO YOUR HOMEWORK! The thing was NOT created by Parker Bros.
Here let me help you out.... A brief history of the Ouija Board
The basic concept of the Ouija Board dates back to Pythagoras in 540 BCE. He would interpret messages from the spirit world with his student Phlolaus*The Apocrypha The concept of the refined Ouija Board was invented in 1853 by French spiritualist, M. Planchette. The Ouija Board was a large piece of paper and the wedge was heartshaped with two wheels on each end. The third end had a pencil attached. Then people one or more people would place their fingers on it and the wedge would move and draw pictures or form words. The modern Ouija Board is now a board with number and letters. The modern board was invented around 1892 by Elija J Bond and William Fuld in Baltimore The wedge or planchette can changed to plastic. All rights to the Ouija Board were purchased by Parker Brother in 1966. The Ouija Board sales has been second only to Monopoly.
The game is used by many to channel the spirits that speak their messages by spelling out messages on the board of arranged numbers and letters.
Over the years there were many types of Ouija Boards. It has gone through many changes until you get what we have today.

I'm not sure if you can get a refund but I'd try to. My friend used one years ago with another friend in her home, and she didn't think any thing was gonna happen, all of a sudden they bot freaked out and let go of the pointer(not sure of the correct term), unfortunatley it didn't stop and carried on spelling the word hell. With that the board flew against the wall and they heard a loud, dark angry spirit upstairs, she said it sounded like it was charging around upstairs but then turned and was making its way down the stairs fast. By then the whole house felt like it was shaking so they made a run for it to the front door in pyjamas and no shoes and legged it to her mothers. She said she turned back to her house and although she couldn't see everything clearly, the windows all over the front of the house looked like they were being shook.
The next day she went back into the house with her father, and as they walked through the door BOTH saw a small goblin like creature jump off the stairs and run into the kitchen. I know this sounds hard to believe but it's all true, infact from that day whenever she had visitors, not all but most of them saw this goblin in various places round the house, oh and her daughter (4 1/2)
kept on being found talking to someone, she said he wore a dark suit and a black hat but he didn't like her mummy. Subsequently they moved house about a month later.
If you are insistant in still doing this you need to go onto a website that will give you advice on how to put a protection around you and the house, that is the ONLY safe way of doing this.
None of what I have written is myth or lies, it's fact and although a few of your answers are from non believers I urge you to take this seriously. Good spirits don't use ouija to contact the living only bad ones, so don't be fooled if someone comes through saying they're a relative, remember they're mischeivous. Good luck

You've had some interesting answers so far, but I hope this has some use for you. I was given my first personal Ouija board for Christmas when I was in middle school, but the kids in our family had been using them for years to talk to dead relatives and such, and to generally scare the crap out of each other. We never had any bad experiences, mainly because we were well protected. I would suggest making your own board and not buying the one from the store. You need to know what materials went into it and also can customize it. Also, always take things with a grain of salt. You won't be contacting spirits always, especially if you have no idea how to or no connection to the spirits in question. And, I believe you've already had this advice, but having some protection will help, so look into what you can do to make your enviroment tuned into your energy. Have fun, and don't try to take over the world. *laughs*

I believe in the Ouija board. It is a way of allowing spirits to contact you moderately safely with out the risk of them hanging around afterwards.
You have to approach the idea with a serious and believing mind if you are going to use this game. Don't meddle with things just for the sake of "fooling around." You could end up with an undesirable situation.
Also, remember that you will not always have success contacting spirits with the Ouija board. When you do have success, never forget to ask the spirit to leave before you are finished. If the spirit is done contacting you, the pointer will probably move to goodbye.
For more info, you can read the following, or search the web for information about sceances or ouiji boards. Be safe.
"The Ouija Board has been around for many years. Normally sold as a children's game, it is made by Parker Brothers and sold in almost every toy store across America. Although it is sold as a game it is best to used by someone who at least knows how to do some type of protection ritual first before attempting to use the Ouija Board. The reason for this is because you don't want some spirit good or bad to possibly enter your body or to keep hanging around you after you are done. A simple ritual to strengthen the Aura will be sufficient. You may want to do a banishing ritual afterwards to make sure that the spirit goes away. The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram would be good for that. Once you have your board all you need then is some candles and maybe some incense and a quiet place to work. Now if you have all the above then let's get started.....
First you want to go to your quiet place, someplace in your house where you will not be disturbed. Turn off the lights and light the candles and incense. If you have 2 people it always seems to work better for some reason. Do your protection ritual whatever you choose as your own style of protection. If you do not know one then you can simply imagine your body surrounded by a sphere of bright white light. The color white is always used for protection and purity. Then when you are relaxed enough, each person place their fingertips on the edge of the disc. Be sure not to push down very hard at all or the disc will not slide around like it is supposed to. You may then ask if there is anyone present with you here in the room. Or are there any spirits here that wish to communicate at this time? You may want to ask this several times. It may take a little while before it will start to move. When it starts to move slowly towards the yes then you know you have made contact with some form of entity. It usually takes a few minutes or so to start getting any results if you do. Don't expect to get results every time, for you are not commanding these spirits, you are simply asking them if they want to talk. Once you have made contact, then ask the spirit what its name is. Then you may proceed to ask the spirit any questions you want. Things will usually start to speed up a little from that point on. Sometimes when a spirit is ready to leave, the disc will just go off the board. Write down your experiences every time you use the Ouija Board and keep them all in a little journal for future reference. Now the the most important part... Make sure you do some form of banishing ritual in order to make sure that the spirit has departed and is not still hanging around. The choice is yours and you don't have to do this banishing, but it is always better if you can. If the spirit stays and hangs around you it may very well try to influence you to its way of thinking and it may not be a good spirit. So just take precautions and your experiences should be quite enjoyable!"

Leave well alone, although now you've bought it, it shouldn't leave your house. Keep it out of sight. My neighbours tried to get rid of thiers when they were spring cleaning and for the week adn a half it wasn't in the house they had nothing but bad luck. The brand new car wouldn't start, the electrics blew and cost £200, the gas boiler went on the blink, an old favourite picture frame fell off the wall and smashed (noone near it at the time, banging noises keeping them awake at night-they thought it was us but we were fast asleep in bed. The day they got the ouija board back, everything returned to normal. It now lives in a dark corner of the attic!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Ouija boards are bad if you don't know how to protect yourself from any hostile entities that you may accidentially attract. If you want to communicate with the Unseen World, don't "holla" out to anything that wants to answer. Use a grimore, study the Arcane Arts and learn how to defend yourself, then call up a specific entity. However having said that, there are much safer places to dabble than in Necromancy. Learn some simple energy imprintation spells first, build your strength and find out where your talents are before you throw yourself off a cliff to see if you can fly. Take off from the ground FIRST and check it out.

I've used one before. We bought this board called the "Psychic Circle".
It came with a little booklet telling you all about how to do it right, what protective chants to say before you start, etc.
It was a real laugh, I have to tell you. We (my sister, my brothers, even my mum!) sat at it every night for about a fortnight. We got tons and tons of "messages" - it was a very thorough board, with spaces for numbers, letters and even emotions and compass points, so it was (mostly) easy to understand.
Not once did we get a "you are going to die" message, or anything creepy like that. On the contrary, we were told about our past lives, and just had a generally good time.
One of the spirits said he was one of our ancestors. He lived around the 1900s, and when he told us what his favourite song was, my mum sung the first line to check if that was the one he meant, and the counter-thingy started to sway back and forth - very amusing, and quite a weird sensation to have the counter moving like that under our fingers!
We stopped in the end because we couldn't tell if the spirits were really who they said they were - nothing was verifiable, and interest just started to wane.
But we still ay now, "Do you remember the Psychic Circle?"
It really was great fun :)

It will work but not in the way everyone believes
the way it works is a thing called "idiomoter movement" basically if you go in to it with the intention of finding a certain person your mind will move your hand subliminally!
FOR EXAMPLE :
i was with some friends once and a mate of mine who is really connected to the occult decided that we should try it to see if we could reach some one any way thier was 6 of us and before i tried it i decided to research it and found the idiomoter theory and decided to try it anyway. the night came and the six of us had met up in a wood close to "the occult friend's" house and we took the glass and ouija board and some candles and sat in a circle i told my friends that we should try and contact a teenager named emilee that had hung herself in these woods "A story that i made up and devoloped some back story, enough to make my freinds believe anyway!" we had begun the so called seance and my occult friend said "if their is a preseance among us make your self known (the fake spirit pointed to yes) they freaked out and he said can you spell out your name (unsurprisingly the glass moved E. M. I. L. E. E.) at which point i burst into laughter and confessed all they were none to pleased!!

They are a joke. Like what was answered before. It is just a game. I do however have a very old really thick one that is all made out of wood. I don't know it's history but someone has played on it so much it's getting hard to read. It is layed out differently than the "NEW" ones. I don't beleive in these things but I like mine. So many people are interested in it and I don't have a thing to tell them as no one has seem one like it before.
