....and I want to build a kind of lizard house so I can watch them out the window. What would attract them? Straw floors, grass or old cloths? What will make them feel safe and even lay their eggs there? What kinds of snacks can I leave to attract them? A little bowl of water or a miniature swimming pool? I don't want to catch them, just let them come and go and watch them in their house.
I've got lots of those dark brown ones with the bright red and yellow throats that puff out. I've got chameleons that are sweet. and others that are grey and white and squiggly and are marked like a rattlesnake. Don't like them as well.
Any suggestions? Don't want to spend $$$, just set it up.

BTW, they lay eggs in my laundry room, closets, workshop, usually in a soft place, but not always dark. They climb up on my kitchen window. I thought of setting up an aquarium right at the window turned sideways with a good place they'd like to lay their eggs. Should I cover the top so it's kind of dark?

I live in Florida too and let me tell you how it works in my yard.......I have made a village of 6 frog houses for the frogs, I have a big bird house that sits on a 10 ft. high pole. I have a tiny hut made of twigs and woven vines for the faeries. The frogs live in the bird house that's on the 10 foot pole. The snakes live in the frog village in those houses and the lizards like the faeire hut.
What you propose is a pretty cool idea, but use more natural materials as opposed to cloth. And if you have a way to keep some bugs interested in that area then you'll have a lot of activity. They don't like to swim in water and they'll get their water from licking rocks, although I have on occasion caught them drinking water out of the cat's bowl. They like damp leaves for laying eggs in. I have lizards in my yard that I see every day, same ones, and some have names, but once they find a place they like to stay, they don't stray far from it.

It is a male lizard, due to the red neck, however I suggest letting it go back to the wild. If you found it in florida it is most likely a green anole, which are very helpful little guys around your garden, and I'm surprised you haven't seen more around your pool area. But if you really MUST want it was a pet, you will need a 10 gallon tank, a heat lamp, a heating pad, a heating rock, a water dish, some soil ground *sand works too*, and plenty of climbing objects are they are arborious. I wish you luck on making a good choice, and please before you decide to keep ANY reptile that was born into the wild, make sure you have all the right accommodations. P.S. They eat about 2-3 times a week, 2 dozen large crickets.

The dark ones you see are called Cuban anoles. They are obviously not from Florida. I live in Tampa, and they are all over the place. They are more aggressive than the green anoles, and will kill them if given the chance. That is why you hardly ever see the green ones around here. They eat insects, and Florida is full of them, so it is kind of pointless to buy food for a lizard that shouldn't be here and is very capable of catching bugs on it's own. It's your money, so spend it how you like.

Sounds like you have the American Anole and maybe some other anole species. I'm not sure about a house construction, but these lizards love thick vegetation. You can get meal worms at a pet store or raise them yourself with a starter bunch and the Anoles should like that as a food source. Small crickets would be good too and are easy to raise yourself. I admire your approach of wanting to keep them outside and in their natural environment. Watching anoles flare their dewlaps and do pushups is great fun !

Try a search on Green anole, Carolina anole, or American anole.
These are types of native gecko lizards.
