Go with the muratic acid but, don't get it on the grass or plants, use rubber gloves. It's used in homes to clean fireplace brick. It should work good, use it accordingly and see what solution with water works, IE: 50-50 or whatever.

Muriatic acid on cotton balls works well, but be sure to wipe it off immediately and wash the treated area with cold water. This will remove years of grime, soot and other dirt.
