This refers to how much data the processor is designed to handle. Computers operate in bits. Each bit is a 1 or a 0. This is known as binary counting( as a opposed to decimal which is the standard 10 base counting that we all learned in school). So eight bits looks something like this 10010101 eight digits consisting of either a 1 or a 0. Most stats and scores etc are often limited in systems that are built on 8 bit systems. Most systems now are 32 bit standard and 64 bit is out there and becoming more common.

BTW the number in binary above represents the number 149.

Hi. You have a good answer above. The chip is limited to 256 numbers (0 to 255) (00000000 = 0, 11111111 = 256) so it takes much longer to process commands at the machine level.
