When did the YANKEE northeastern Republican Party stopped being the party of progressive values and started being the party of right-wing CONFEDERATE corporate/fundamentalist values?
I say 1964, when they chose right-wing reactionary Barry Goldwater over liberal Nelson Rockefeller from New York. Goldwater was against civil rights. Rockefeller, being a LIBERAL, was for them.
Formerly racist southern conservative Democrats jumped ship that election and have been largely voting Republican ever since.

The republican party needed troops. They enlisted the 'conservative' religious right to serve as privates and corporals in their drive to re-capture the government. What the party at the time didn't see was that the privates and corporals would become the generals and the moderate right wing turn of the party would become a rush to the far right. Like a snowball rolling downhill the GOP began to pick up all of the politically out of favor....big business rather than labor....polluters rather than 'greens'....the 'little woman at home' rather than the feminist....the 'return to the old days that never were champions rather than the social progressives...the mega churched rather than than the religious folks that don't approve of 'praying in the streets'. Finally, the facisti element of state/industry and church made its move in the election of George W. Bush....who, because of total incompetence to deal with the real world became the 'god that failed'. And so it goes!

Political Evolution. The political mind is more useful when its deceiving. If you believe you are a republican, and voted republican and have disagreed the political path, then you must be a democrat?
Perhaps it's more inside the principles of the people, and whether they can identify honesty or not.
As long as we get the right people into the political ring, we wont have trouble, but if all of our candidates are scandalous, we have no choice but to vote for a wrong one, because no one is right.

Time change everything.... If things were going to stay the same we'd still have the Whig and Federalist parties.
Everything evolves. Into one direction of another.
While the Ultra Right is so Fundalmenttalist. The Ultra Left is full of liberalism, American liberalism, social democracy, socialism, communism, syndicalism, communalism, communitarianism, libertarian socialism, anarchism, left-libertarianism, some forms of populism, anti-colonialism, green politics, most forms of progressivism,

I've been a conservative for thirty years and became indoctrinated to the GOP LONG before I moved down South. I see no difference between the northern conservatives and those who are natives of the south.
Spin away, the racist thing and PC doesn't and won't work. :)

the 1968 election cinched it with the crook Nixon whose entire campaign appealed to white conservative racists in the south. And, then the racist pedophile Strom Thurmond jumped from the Dixiecrats in the Democratic party and went over to the Repukes. Yes, the south has risen again and so has their ignorant fascist ideals with the Bush administration..
