When I was 17 I moved out to L.A. with a buddy and I was all into the book Shogun by James Clavell. I still like it today, having read it another dozen times over the years, but not as much. A really cool sci-fi book I like a lot is Neuromancer by William Gibson. Cyberpunk novel.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein. ANYTHING by Tom Clancy or with his name on it that is written by someone else. There are also many good books from the 1970-80s on 'war' ... especially on the 'third world war' that was supposed to be coming before the Berlin Wall came down ... but you'll have to go to a library and look at their 'card files' (usually on computer, these days) for those ...
Also read the book by Sting (a memoir), and the book by Stephen King on Writing (written after he was critically injured after being hit by a car. GOOD LUCK and GOOD READING.

Have you ever read the book A Million Little Pieces? The author lied in the beginning and said it was based on his true life story, but later admitted it wasn't true. It is a really good book though. I know I'm a girl, but I still couldn't put it down. It's about a drug addict and his time in rehab trying to come off the drugs and fix his life. It's really really good.
