Neither is a holiday in the U.S. The Fourth of July is a Holiday but "Quatro de Julio" is not. Get it? But people do give Cinco de Mayo more of an excuse to party.

Cinco de Mayo is an excuse. July 4th is a time to reflect and appreciate the sacrifice of the many who fought to free our Great Nation.

The fourth of July is celebrated in the entire US as our Independence day.

Cinco De Mayo is celebrated in parts of the US as Mexican Independence day.
That is the day a group of Mexicans defeated one of Napoleons armies when he attempted to claim Mexico for France.
It is odd that this day is celebrated in the US but not in Mexico.
