As a society, we're often told that holding on to our past (especially events and people which have hurt us) is un-healthy!

However, Golda Meir said : "One cannot and must not try to erase the past merely because it does not fit the present.”

Is it healthy or un-healthy to erase one's past? & Why ?
Your thoughts please.

Erase the past? No, we shouldn't do it. This means to erase all knowledge, experience, etc. To start everyday like there was nothing before it means there will be nothing after it. It literally means your life only lasts one day.
There are mental conditions which do this to a person. Those people do not know their relatives and friends, and every time they meet them they ask themselves what on earth they had in common. It's a nightmare!
The same goes for societies and this is why history is important. However, if we twist it and make it suit the present, we do forget who we are. We also show no respect to our ancestors and make their lives meaningless.
The past should be remembered - it is the grudges and hatred we should forget, not the facts. We should learn from history, not use it.
''A fool is a not someone who errs, but someone who makes the same mistake over and over again.''

The past can never be erased even if a person wanted it to be.
Your past makes you who you are today.
My past has made me so much wiser and stronger so even though a lot of bad stuff happened I would never want to change it.
You always find the wisest people are the ones who have had to really search inside to find the straight they never tho rt they had.
I believe I am blessed because I have found myself (emotionally and spiritually) which is the best gift you can gain in life.
I feel so lucky to see and know the things that I do now.

When you erase the past you erase yourself in a sense. You are letting go of the moments and memories they gave including making you wiser and more capable to handle the future. Yes you should let go of the past, by that t means that you should not forget about it but just don't bring it into your present life. And if you completely let go of it then you are trying to let the past repeat itself. For example, when a child does something wrong and his/her mom gives him/her punishment then the child is learning that what he/she did was wrong even though he/she might be embarrassed at the moment (if anyone else was there) but if the child is so embarrassed from it then the child will try to forget it and repeat the same mistake.

I believe you must accept your past and live your future.
What as happened has happened for a reason, to make you stronger or for you to be a better person.
We are only given what we can take, and it is what we need at the time, maybe to learn something.

I accepted what happened to me and moved on from it. I cannot forget and wont put it in the filing system in my brain never to come out due to the fact it always comes back and bites you when you least expect it.
Accept it and move on from it, live your life dont hold back. We have one choice, one life and make the most of it while you can.

It's un-healthy to erase the past, because you would make no progression if life if you always live in the present. And you would have a bad case of amnesia. @_@

I'm a bit of a dweller and I don't cast off feelings easily. I think it's unwise to dwell and also unwise to erase the past. I think the best thing is to learn from our past and move on.

For other Christians my answer would contain other things as well.

Your past is not erasable, only useable for future benchmarking and a part of our lives that we must learn to manage and organize in ways that become useful rather than a liability.

It depends what goes down lol.
For real though i think we all try to erase the bad memories out of our head and ofcourse we try our best to keep the good times with us. The good thing that comes from bad memories is learning not to make the same mistakes.
like me......i try to erase the bad things that went down in the past, i think its healthy because nobody wants bad shi...circulating through their head, think positive, stay positive!!

There is no point going back to the past. It is very unhealthy to think about it, you think about people you will never see again, you think about all the mistakes you made and you neglect the future which will be the past soon which will be bad and not worth remembering

There's a difference in holding on to ones past, and learning lessons from that past. If we don't learn lessons from our past mistakes we are doomed to repeat them. We can't 'erase' our past completely or we forget the lessons we learned from those experiences. We do, however, have to get over them. From any given mistake, we learn the necessary lessons, vow never to repeat that same mistake, and move on.
