i love this question because i LOVE SPONGEBOB!
I think his parents are round like normal sponges because probably at their time people were round sponges...but maybe now the new generation likes sponges square. maybe spongebob has a mutation, or maybe they call him square pants because of his unqiueness compared to all other sponges ! VOLA!

LOL. Well, Spongebob's grandfather (on his father's side) is square. So, I assume it is skipped genes. Think of the recessive and dominant trait theory. If the square shape is recessive and the round shape is dominant, there is a 25% chance that Spongebob could be made square if his mother also carried the recessive "gene."
Or, they could just be pulling your leg. :)

When he was born, he was sent to a processing plant and made into a square. His parents, coming from an earlier generation, did not go through the same process.

When people get older they change shape like sponge bobs parents!!! Plus its a cartoon! And they could have changed because they have been through more!!! Hope I helped!!!

lol cute question! Maybe his mom & dad have been underwater longer than Spongebob and have soaked up more water. Spongebob will probably look like his parents as he grows older.

I think that through the years their square edges have worn down to the round shape that they are today. Even cartoons loose their "figure" when they get older!!
