I can't speak to the food, but yes, doctors are available to the residents of correctional institutions. Depending on the malady, they may be treated by a resident doctor, or if the illness is more severe, they may be transported to a separate medical facility to receive treatment.

Most prisons have some kind of "yard area" available for outdoor recreation, and prisoners are allowed in shifts to go outdoors under varying levels of supervision depending on the security level of the facility. Some prisons, however, are what's known as Supermax facilities -- those are prisons where the residents are kept in lockdown for 23 hours per day. Obviously those residents are kept under stricter supervision than those in minimum-security facilities.

By the way, to the poster above whose bro-in-law is a prison "guard"... most correctional officers hate being referred to as a guard. "Guards look after inanimate objects, corrections officers look after the safety and well-being of the incarcerated." I did a lot of research on prisons for a book I am currently writing, and that was one of the resounding things I heard from many of the men I interviewed.

Hope that helps.

I had a close family member in prison. You get served cafeteria style food....often not so tasty and in limited quantities. In this particular state, the prisons have a type of commissary and if you have money sent to you and placed in your account, you can order snacks like crackers, Little Debbies, candy, instant coffee & tea, etc. There are outdoor facilities available at most prisons but it all depends on your level of crime if you are allowed to go out and for how long. Yes, doctors and dentists are available. You are generally given a physical once a year and you can go if you become sick. In our particular state, they take $5 out of your account if you go to the doctor. This keeps people from going when it isn't necessary. (If you don't have money in your account, you can still go.) Depending on the prison, you get decent care.

My bro-in-law used to be a prison guard. I guess they actually have pretty good food and yes they do have access to medical help if needed. Honestly, I think some people feel better about being in prison because it's a guaranteed home. I know it sounds dumb but it's true. They can further their education and save money. However, I wouldn't recommend trying to go to prison on purpose. I have also heard about the VERY in depth strip searches. They check places you probably didn't even know they could reach. There is no privacy and you aren't exactly surrounded by the nicest people.

I have a friend who's had some problems with the law. He says food in county and city jails is pretty bad but food in prison is better. It's usually meat/potatoes/vegetables, but nothing fancy like steak or anything.

They do have medical care in prison, but it's not good. When you're in prison you have a job to do--working in the yard or in an office. If you get sick, you put in for 'sick call' but you still have to go to your job. When my friend was there they had a terrible flu epidemic and everyone got it, guards and everyone, because inmates were not allowed to stay in their cell if they got it. My friend was taking classes in computer science but the classes ended when his teacher got sick. The teacher was a volunteer from the community, and wrote a letter to the prison management that he'd had the fu three times that year and didn't want to be exposed to it anymore. He gave a copy of this letter to each of his students, so that's how I know.

Many people in prison have mental or emotional problems. The can be treated (to some extent), but in the meetings they have with counselors or psychologists they must stay in a cage! Usually a psychologist meets with three or four patients at the same time, each in his own cage.

don't recognize and don't care to make certain, sure they have a doctor on group and an infirmary to look after the very ill (or wounded), the heavily ill are oftentimes sent to a wellbeing facility. there is an outdoors facility (it fairly is the place lots of the wounded get their wounds). uncertain approximately an allowance nonetheless.
