Well, Christ said something like "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. Better to enter life with one hand than to go into hell with two."
Now, today most people will take that figuratively, to mean that if some sin is hurting your faith, to get rid of it or "cut it off." Unfortunately, the early church took a more literal meaning to it. Many church leaders would amputate their hands or gouge out their eyes ("If your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out . . .")
It was self-inflicted punishment, but punishment nonetheless.

in some cultures it was perfectly acceptable...
However in many of the western cultures it was viewed as a sin and the church preached against it...so it's not there was a punishment...more like spiritual guilt...

i can't tell you the exact punishments..but i can tell you it was named as a greater sin than rape and bestiality (because sperm was wasted).
