Assume I want to play a movie on my desktop HD and have output on analog TV.

1. Will a normal S-video cable do the trick?

2. If so, what will be the quality on analog TV?

3. What is the main purpose of S-video cable?

Thank you.

An S-Video cable will carry only the video signal... you'll need to run audio through your pc or run a separate set of RCA cables for audio.

Turn off your TV and your pc...make the necessary connections. Turn on the tv...adjust the input setting to the appropriate input for your tv and then turn on the pc...if your pc doesn't automatically adjust to the secondary monitor (your tv)...restart your pc and tap on the f8 key a few times during start up.

The purpose of an S-video cable is to carry a slightly higher bandwidth signal ...and the quality is about that of analog cable.

Good luck!

S-Video will work fine. But if you plan to have sound coming from the TV you will need to get a stero 3.5mm to RCA patch cable to connect from the laptop headphone or line out jack to the RCA type audio inputs of the TV as S Video only carries the video signal Basically S-Video carries the signal in parts the Chroma and colors are on seperate lines where as composite video the signals are all togehter on one line. Using S-Video will give you better image quality vs composite RCA type video cables

This is an image of the audio cable you need available at walmart for around 5 or 6 bucks http://cablesdirect.com/prodimages/CC399-12_LR.jpg

I hope this helps Good luck

I had that problem when I upgraded the dvd player, I had to buy an adapter. Just go to best buy and tell them, they probably have an adapter.
