I parked my car last tuesday right on front of my house and put a cover on it. After I came back from my trip on Monday, one of the neighbors had placed a note saying that my spot was not for long term parking, and that if I didn't move my car it was going to be towed away on my own expense. Is it legal for anyone to call and get my car towed when I have parked it on my own street, even if it is parked there for a week?

Depending on your local city/town bylaws... yep. Many allow parking for no more then 24 hours at one time. Check your local bylaws and thank your neighbour for giving you a chance if he is indeed correct.

Legally, the neighbor has nothing to stand on. The street is a public place, but what you may want to do is to go to the Police and ask them if there is a statute against long parking on the street (note to mention that the car is going to be covered, thus making it obvious that it is long term parked.)

I doubt that the cops will backup your neighbor but you should check to be sure. The neighbor probably got up set at the cover you placed on the car and was concerned that you had some "non-working" parts car sitting there. (Obviously if you were IN the house sick and the car sat there for several days, no one would call the cops!) You may also want to talk to the neighbor and get them to understand that you are traveling and even ask for their assistance in keeping an eye on your place and on your car.
