Rather then trying to install additional pdf making tools, I'd suggest using OpenOffice to type up your book, then it has PDF export right within it.

There are also tools to create CHM files, etc.

Write the book in any wordprocessing program such as Word or Wordperfect and then use a free utility such as PDF995 to create it as a PDF file.
