What does the term "dilated" mean in terms of pregnancy?

Dilating means opening up. When a pregnant woman is said to be "dialated," it means her cervix is opening up to allow the baby to pass through. This is measured in centimeters (1, 2, and so on.) 10 cm. is considered "complete" and ready to deliver. If you look at it on a ruler, you see it's not much -- there's still a lot of stretching that happens after that.

Dilated refers to the opening of the cervix to prepare for delivery. A woman is considered fully dilated if her cervix opening is 10 centimeters.
