progressive is music that eschews being catchy, and goes out on a limb to create something experimental, for the better or worse. this means longer songs, different musical styles/instruments, lyrics, everything. this holds up in any genre as well. king Crimson was a progressive rock band. Refused were a progressive hardcore band. they sound nothing alike, yet everything mentioned above holds true. peace.

They are hardly nerds just of the forefront of music (see above post)

Art rock / Avantgard music covers jazz and all types rock mainly. It really covers taking influences from many types of music and putting it together in a new song or music structure. There are no rules in this type of music and some of it is way out there, but it really entices the listener to break down their thoughts on what music is and what it should sound like. These composers and bands have formed a sound that is used today in many experimental bands and even standard rock bands today.

Examples of Pioneers in art rock: Miles Davis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Throbbing Gristle, David Bowie, John Cage, Pink Floyd, Sonic Youth, Phillip Glass, Talking Heads and Frank Zappa.

Newer bands: The Mars Volta, Broken Social Scene and Wilderness

I'm not sure but the name makes me think of the Mars Volta. Kind of modern artsy prog rock. The Mars Volta are really great. The record Francis the Mute is really fantastic, one of the best records of the decade so far in my opinion.

avant-garde (meaning exploratory and trying new things that haven't been done), breaking the mold, and doing complex song structures that really take a lot of talent to pull off

basically, they are the nerds of the rock world, and are so cool, nonetheless
