You will have to read the ACD stories to find out how he does it, and why Sherlock Holmes is still so popular. Is it elementary, my dear Watson?
He uses different devices in each story, so you really do have to read them to figure this out.

Generally he does it by having the crime so complicated that it is not easy to decide who the criminal is. However throughout the stories clues are given that are obscure but which mean something to Holmes. It is only in the final page or pages that he reveals how he solved the crime thus creating tension throughout the book.

By the way he never, in any on the stories. used the phrase 'Elementary my dear Watson'.
