That's a tough question because there have been so many great QB's before/during his time (Montana, Elway, Marino), and some that are playing currently and beyond him (Manning, Palmer). If he has a fairly productive, winning season in 2007, i think there will be strong arguements for him to be the best ever, if not at the LEAST a top 3 QB of all time.
Lets look at the facts. I could throw out a bunch of stats to back my opinion, but im just throwing a few important ones. Before the 2007 season:
2nd in career passing yards (57500)
2nd in career TD's (414)
1st in career completions (5,021)
an 85.1 career QB rating
61% career passing completion
36 game winning drives
The only 3 time NFL MVP
While those are unbeliable individual stats, people say he Quarterbacks often should be measured by their wins. So here's Favre's compared to Elway's:
147 to 148
But theres one side note i think people forget. Brett has played 16 seasons in the League, the same number Elway did before retiring. One problem: Brett Favre didn't play his rookie season, so really he's only started 15 years in the league. So lets shave off Elways last year to make a fair comparison between 15 years of starting:
Favre: 147 Elway: 135
Now I know people are going to oppose me and say "he threw all those INTs, he doesnt care blah blah blah" well after 16 years in the league, INT's tend to pile up regardless; Marino had 255 and Elway had 230. Also, aside from Reggie White, can anyone name me one All Pro or Perrenniel Pro Bowler, on EITHER side of the ball? Also about the number of Superbowls, thats a TEAM effort. Do you people honestly think Troy Aikman and Terry bradshaw were better? look at all that talent around them!
Favre, whether you hate him or love him, has done everything that has asked to be done by a Quarterback. He's carried his team on his back when needed, hes won games including the big one, he's piled up phenominal stats, has never missed a game in his career, and has been a consistent, constant unquestionable leader of his team. Brett is one, and argulably, the Greatest Quarterback of All Time.

Yeah, you must be an idiot! Why would you even consider that the only 3 time MVP in history and the soon to be career leader in Wins, TDs, Yards, and Completions could possibly be the best ever.
And the guy who thinks Aikman is better....are you brain dead? Look at the supporting cast of the Cowboys then. Aikman only had 1 season of 20 TDs and never threw for 3500 yards. Favre had 8 seasons of 30 TDs (not a piss poor career high of 23) and 12 seasons over 3500 yards! True Aikman only had 141 Interceptions compared to Favre's 273. Did you stop to look at the fact that Aikman has 165 TDs compared to Favre's 414?!
So Favre's TD to Int ratio is 1.52 compared to Aikman's 1.17. By your logic, Reggie Jackson is one of the worst hitters in history because he holds the strikeout record, and Nolan Ryan sucks because he lost 292 games.
To answer your question, Favre is a definite first ballot Hall of Famer. He won't be remembered as the greatest though. Maybe amongst sports commentators, players, and coaches (people who know football), but not the fans. I think he will be remembered in the top 5 when he retires. Man it would have been nice to see him throw to Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Randy Moss, or Marvin Harrison though. Also do you think his INTs would be so high if he had the all-time rushing leader behind him or Rice, John Taylor, or Terrell Owens as his receivers???
And, Super Bowls are important, but not the only factor. Trent Dilfer is not a better QB than Marino, and Terry Bradshaw was helped by the best defense in history. If Chicago would have beaten Indy last year because of defense and special teams, would that make Grossman better than Manning?

Only in Green Bay. Joe Montana will be remembered as the best, MAYBE Peyton Manning can take the title when he retires. Joe Montana won 4 Superbowls with NO INTs. When the game was on the biggest stage he did his job. Personally I think Elway was a bum. He really reminds me of Favre. Overhyped by his fans.
Now you want to talk about Mr Interception and compare him to Montana and say about well look he has more pass yards and such. Since when did Favre play in the West Coast Offense? They are playing in different styles of offense.

Calisurfer no doubt has the best rational argument to get the best answer.
1. you cannot base an argument stating a qb is the best by the number of superbowls he has. it's a team effort. that's the same thing as saying, trent dilfer was better then dan marino. yeah, right. irrational.
2. interceptions tend to rack up after so many years, especially when you play with less talent around you. when receivers run the wrong routes and an interception is thrown, the qb is usually always blamed for it. i've seen that A LOT the past couple years with favre, not saying that it's all the receivers fault.
3. only 3 time mvp of the nfl. that's an outstanding achievement in the nfl. remarkable.
4. largest # of wins for the seasons he played. although this can also be in the "team effort" for statistics.
5. td passes. this is a tough one. i know he will surpass marino, but man, marino is surely up there in my book. i honestly think marino is the greatest ever even after favre passes his record for td's as marino went many years with little to no talent around him as well. he's the only one better in my book though.
6. aikman doesnt compare. he had his entire career with tremendous talent and didnt play that long. get real!!!
7. elway was awesome, but played with a lot of talent.
in the end, i rate Favre at 2nd best in history. he plays with heart and an attitude. he plays for the team and not for himself. i barely have marino over favre. just barely.

Only by Green Bay packer fans. He is a great QB, but not of the same mold or quality of a Montana, Young, Bradshaw, Marino, Fouts, Namath, or several others. I know he has a lot of fans right now, but in a few years he will be remembered as a great QB but not even in the top 10.

Do get me wrong Favre is one of my favorite players of all-time, but there is no way I could call him the best QB ever. Many (not all) but many of his statistical success has been a result of him play for so long (these last three years have not been good). Had he just retired when he lost what made him so electrifying he would not had made so many records. There are a few more QBs that would deserve this title over him.

Nope. He'll get the same level of appreciation of say John Elway -- usually third or fourth on many lists.
Montana almost always seems to be on top, for good reason with the 4 Super Bowls.
Favre's been incredible. The one Super Bowl win gets him over Marino, but not Elway or Montana.
By the way, what "talent" are you referring to with Elway? He had Sammy Winder as his running back for years and years. He only had any real talent his last three years.

Favre is the BEST to ever play. Maybe these other quarter backs would have more interceptions if they didn't miss ANY games. He has the completions record, while not haveing the attempts record. Touchdowns, games played, yards, 3 mvp's, two Superbowl seasons with a win, Only 1 losing season at quarterback. He moves way better still than Marino or Elway ever did. Remember when Marino was playing in a plastic boot so his leg wouldn't fall off. Now that is what I call past your prime.

He wasnt fluent enough, when you think of QBs you think of Marino Montana Elway. Farve does throw a good ball, his machanics are one of the worst in history but he gets the job done, he goes out there everyday and does well however it is not pretty. Although one can make a very good argument for him his style wont allow him to be the best.

In MY OPINION yes, Brett Favre will be remembered as the best quarterback ever. It's not always about superbowl rings... but instead pure ability as an athlete. ONLY 3 time MVP blows any amount of superbowl rings out of the water because it takes a TEAM to win a superbowl... an MVP award is recognizing the athlete HIMSELF.
