So often I'm struck by the lack of sensitivity by the media in relation to the welfare of victims. Every journalist should think about the results of their reporting and weigh that against their right to report. Unfortunately, in today's society, the air of competition for stories overcomes any compunction they may feel toward getting the story, "and getting it first."

Whereas I think the victim's identity should have been kept private, the press is not responsible for his death.
If they would have been able to conceal his identity completely, i.e., not even show his family's faces or publish their names, he would not have faced the issues of "everyone looking at him".
The problem here is that many victims never get over their abuse. When living with the shame (which I wish they wouldn't feel) becomes unbearable, they do things like commit suicide.
I wish he would have gone to counseling instead of internalizing it. I don't think he realizes how sympathetic people really were to his plight.
And the monsters who did this to him are all in jail, as they deserve to be. I hope they get their just desserts in prison for what they did to this poor young man.

No, the press did not contribute to his death. That press is merely a reflection of our society, the society that created the jerks that beat and humiliated that poor kid in the first place, and lead to national obsession with his story. In other words, if the press is responsible, then we are ALL responsible. We're the ones watching and coming on here to discuss it. The press is merely giving us what we want. Otherwise, it is best to point the blame at the people who really deserve it: the guys that committed the crime that lead to that kid's tortured and humiliated life becoming what was.

I hadn't heard of this incident, but it's terrible. The kids who did this act--they all need a prison term, not a jail term. As for the media, the media sometimes makes situations a lot worser than they need to be.

the press (in my opinion) hsa no idea how they contribute to things like this, or to anyone's life in general. they are just doing their job. i do agree they had something to do with it, andi think that, yes, things might have turned out differently if the press had not publicized it quite so much. noone likes to be the center of attention all the time.

Did the press throw him over the rail?
No.
Then the press isn't responsible for his death.
