What that is, is a terrible thing. Causing someone harm and laughing at the result is just wrong. Period!!!
Getting ones jollies at the expense of others is against society and against the law, if severe enough. The kind of people that do things like that are the kind that hurt puppies.
They are also the kind of people that cause shootings in schools ans mass murders, they cause people to lose control and act irrationally again innocent people.
The very people that commit these acts are the same ones that start by doing little thing to their perceived enemies, then they expand it to extreme violence because they become numb to the sensation. The urge grows ever more wicked and then it devours you and everyone you touch.
People you don't even think of are touched by it, the mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters. The list is endless. Does that make you feel good now?

One of the first objectives of christians, two thousand years ago, was to "destroy the work of evil on earth".
Indeed, that evil work, as "anti" implies in terms like "antiquity" and "antichrist", was there before (lat. "ante") us christians and not after.
Today, that kind of evil is not even recognised as a part of the historians' knowledge. It's ranked among absurdities and legends. Basically, it means: christians have succeeded in their quest.
To make it clear, we, the christians, have carefully shaped many generations and bastardised them with forced marriages (i.e. the church leaders said: Mike, you will marry Cindy and won't love another woman) and xenophobia (i.e. the church leaders said: "slay the infidels!". That thinned the bloodlines and ultimately made humans quite similar to each other.
We could talk from there about brotherhood, not just tribes and nations, and human rights, not just instincts.
Unfortunately, many of us, mixed brothers and sisters, still have the malicious goblin instincts inside our bodies. The homo abilis, so to speak, are fairly rare or extinct. But like the neanderthal man, they could have survived as a part of any homo sapiens, in the gene bag of some lucky men.

I, thank goodness, don't have those feelings. You should talk to someone about it. In my opinion, it is not normal. But, I am not a therapist either. Still, I think you should talk to someone about it. Maybe its a repressed hurt that you endured, that you never got to work out of your system. Therapists are usually covered under insurance. Don't feel bad, though, I have heard most people would benefit from therapy, whether they recognize a problem or not. So just don't feel strange about it. But don't ignore this feeling, if it does not go away on its own soon.

Well, we don't ALL have such thoughts, even in a fleeting moment, but it is true that human misfortune can sometimes trigger a humorous response in many people.
The key, here, is your reference to your thoughts being "compulsions." To me, that implies a certain strength and regularity that I would have to say is not emotionally healthy, and ought to be something you should talk over with a trusted counselor.

we all have a dark side to our psyche, it's actually healthy to be aware of it. it's only when you act on something you know is morally wrong, that you need help.
