Because you won't RECOGNIZE mental illness in animals...If your dog starts humping a dead possum, you don't say he's a necrophiliac now do you?
Somehow people have made a standard for what constitutes "healthy mentation," but what if that standard is flawed? What if all our efforts to improve the lives of ourselves and our children were actually CONTRIBUTING to mental illness? Could it be that the hardship and struggle of life in an uncivilized environment is the way our minds are designed to understand the world? That we will create imaginary enemies and crises in a safe place, because our brains EXPECT danger? That we will argue for no good reason, just because we EXPECT to FIND a good reason?
Could it be that our society promotes unattainable desires in an effort of the media to one-up each other at grabbing more attention for itself? And what about religion? Can it be healthy to let a fairy tale character handle all your personal affairs?
The mind will find a way to function, the "mentally ill" people you see wouldn't act so crazy if their lives depended on it, or if they did, they'd have fewer kids to carry on their crazy legacy...Actual organic mental defects that prevent the potential for rationality are kind of rare, and since animals have less social depravity to malform their perceptions (and thus, actions,) they rarely seem to step out of character.

First off, mental illness takes some higher thought processes. I mean, how can you tell if a spider has a mental illness. They kill each other all the time and work off of instinct. I do think that smarter animals though can have mental illness. For example my dog has Panic attacks quite frequently. If there is a loud noise, for instance, she may just breathe hard and shake for 15-20 minutes, and have almost seizure like activity in her legs. This also happens out of the blue from time to time. I think though humans take care of each other better than animals do. When an animal is sick, the others let it die. We as humans tend to value human life, so we try to help other humans through their difficulty. So what I am saying is that you are more likely to see humans with mental illness because the animals with mental illness die off quickly.

I'm OK, you (animals) are OK, but those (humans) are not OK.
I OK
YOU OK
THEY NOT OK
Good, at least you have originated a good or I Am Well attitude about yourself. The YOU part are animals which could mean the persons closest to you were replaced with another object that was good for you, perhaps the family dog or cat. Now all society of humans must not be well or OK and that way the most influential factors in the formation period of a young persons life maintain anonymity buried deep in the mass where it is easiest to maintain hidden the real cause of this. But you are OK. You are Well and that is best of all. Perhaps someday you will be able to change this internal stance. In this case how about forgiveness and love as tools to alleviate the pressure caused by the energy that is displaced and used to repress the instinct to care for those you love.

I read a study very recently that said that schizophrenia may be the price our species pays for higher thought processes. Something goes haywire in the teen years when your brain is rewiring itself.
And dogs and cats do definitely have panic attacks and PTSD.
And to remind you, abraham lincoln and winston churchill and buzz aldrin (second astronaut on the moon) etc. etc. all had/have severe mental illness. Also, Sen. Kennedy from Massachusetts. So watch what you think about this topic!

our mind works a lot more complicated and when it messes up you notice it more, but if a rat messes up its wires, then it wont be as noticeable- there are mentally ill animals

Because you don't look right. I'm sure a rat recognizes a fellow rat's mental illness, but a human won't as easily. Not that it is impossible, as animals have been caught having sex with corpses and such.

Maybe you're not looking hard enough. Animals tend to have less stress than people, so the rate is lower. But I've encountered some neurotic nut cases.

Well it's just like how many physical illness begin in the mind-
so many of our problems are either self-created or self-contributed.
