Back up all personal data from your PC (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive) and do a Windows "Clean Install" (for instructions go to: (www.theeldergeek.com).

Note: You must use your Recovery disks, if included with your PC, to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP. The Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual FIRST.

Well as what has already been said...first back-up all of your important data....

Know a restore...depends if you mean a roll back or a factory restore....
A roll back just means that you set it back to a time when the computer was working properly...this is used when the comp crashes after (for example) installing new software or drivers....

A factory restore is when you set the settings to how they were when you bought it.....you will lose all your personal settings!

First of all "factory settings" means your PC ends up the same way as when you first bought it i.e. with the original windows setup and the software on it that came supplied. If you restore it in that way, any files and folders will be removed from "My Documents", all user profiles will be lost and any additional software and hardware drivers you installed after purchase will have to be re-installed when you are finished restoring it.

That said, if you are just doing a "System restore", all your personal files and folders will br unaffected and only the software you placed onto your computer after that "restore point" will be removed.

Hope that helps.

are you doing this through windows system restore? you will lose everything.

if you are on about other factory settings e.g. on internet explorer, you will lose any changed settings e.g. the pop up boxes you get when signing into hotmail etc.
