It won't be confusing.
John McLean is the major character, played by Brucie Willis. He is a cop who has had a lot of major adventures. This will probably be just another amazing one.
In the first movie he single handled saved the Skyscraper called the Nagatomi Towers. Thieves, disguised as terrorists took it over to rob the huge vault. He stopped them and saved all the people inside, including his wife Holly.
In the second movie an ex-military special ops group took over the Airport in Washington DC, Dulles. They crashed one plane and then held the airport and all the planes hostage. They did this to free a captured cocaine lord who would reward them all with millions of dollars. John McClain foiled this plot as well.
He gets cut bruised, hurt and bloody, but he keeps coming back for more and more. He faces impossible odds and doesn't let that stop him.
In the fourth film he is sent all over New York by a mad bomber who is the brother of one of the terrorists that John killed in the first movie. It is all a plot to cover a massive theft of the gold repository requiring 15 dump trucks to carry all the gold.
One note about the Federal Level of law enforcement in each movie they are made to look a little foolish, it was less in the third, but it was clear that they did not know what was really going on. In fact the common theme in each movie is that John McLean is the only one that has an idea of what is really going on and no one in law enforcement wants to listen to them when he tries to tell them.
I watched all three episodes last night so I have seen them all recently. You could have seen the second movie without having seen the first and I am sure it will be the same for the fourth movie.

You don't really have to see any of the previous movies to get into it. Once you see it, you'll pretty much see how the others have operated, starting with the Bruce Willis character being always at the wrong place at the wrong time.

They're all about ACTION anyway...no real 'story' line, other than a divorce in his life so there's nothing really to miss. If you're into action, then you will LOVE this movie, cuz it's jam packed with unreal action throughout! You'll probably not only want to see the first 3, but also want to see this one again! That is, IF you're into action! ~K~

go and see it, you kid. If you were not a kid you would be of the generation that enjoyed seeing John MClean kicking asses in the previous 3 films as they were released.
You have no idea when they say Willis is an icon on action films. You're just about to see it by yourself.
Absolutely GO to see it!
