I recommend AVG (it's free too!!). Not too long ago, I was a huge supporter of Norton, and badgered people that would talk down on it. Well...times change, and I became smarter. Norton, in addition to hogging up major amounts of my system resources....will SEE almost anything..but not necessarily before it's too late. By the time Norton picked up my last bug, my system was already infected...and there was nothing it seemed I could do to rid myself of it.
Along comes AVG Antivirus free edition. (found here: http://free.grisoft.com/) I've been using it for about 2 weeks now, and no problems yet.
As far as getting the BSOD....well I dunno. You may have problems on your computer that are well beyond the capabilities of any antivirus out there. Your registry may have become corrupt beyond help...and it's best at that point to just do a clean install of windows.
I hope I helped!!

There is an antivirus program I've seen advertised called Stop Sign, but have not tried it. Also there is PC-Cillin put out by Trend Micro (you can go to www.pc-cillin.com and run a free scan at any time. They will do a complete scan of your computer, tell you what--if any--viruses or threats you may have, and will remove them. If they cannot be removed, they will quarantine them so they won't interfere with your computer).
Do you,by any chance, have Windows Vista installed?? If so, go to www.symantec.com/enterprise/security_response/weblog 2006/a_reality_check_on_patchguard.html . I found this listed when I searched for BSOD under viruses/hoaxes, and it says something along the line that this patchguard on Vista is to blame. You might check it out. :) Jan51601

Firstly, it must be put into perspective - there are a variety of forms of viral protection around at your disposal, so it depends on what you require!
If you are not tech savy, your best off getting a packaged version, which defends on various levels - an internet security system package. these basically combine antiviral protection, spam protection, give firewall defenses to block unwanted hacking, probing, viewing of files and so forth. they also protect against spyware, trojans, phishing, and are also heuristic (identify possible threats which the client has not been told is 100% threat, and tells the company in the process that it exists).
I am a university post graduate, and as such my computer is turned on, with constant broadband connection for litterally months at a time, 24hrs a day. therefore i also need constant protection form crisis's.
i have used norton, kapersky, mcafee, zone alarm and AVG, as well as a few others (on various university pc's and friends/collegues).
However, they are all considerably outclassed by that of Panda Internet Security (XP and Vista ready).
heres the link:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/internetsecurity2007.htm?NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=%2fproducts%2fplatinum_is2005&NRNODEGUID=%7b815165AF-E3AB-412F-A532-E468B7C88548%7d&NRCACHEHINT=NoModifyGuest
Panda Internet Security includes all of these and more:
- Panda Antivirus
- Panda AntiSpyware
- Panda Firewall
- Panda Identity Protect
- Panda AntiSpam
- Panda Parental Control
- Panda Backup
It's very easy to use, installs in 2minutes, (unlike norton which takes what feels like a decade) registration is easy and fast.
best of all it does NOT slow your pc down, i didnt notice a difference. norton makes your pc feel slower, heavier. panda is light, fast, and scans much quicker.
Highly reccommend it. - most of my university friends use it and we've never had any problems with updates or viruses/hacks etc.
happy days!

I use AVG 7. It is a free download from Grisoft. Norton made my computer freeze up all the time. It takes a few clicks to get to the free download.

We used to have Norton and it uses a lot of your RAM--The best program we have found so far is Trend Micro's PCillin program. It's very user friendly and our system runs faster and more efficient.
vivist www.trendmicro.com for more info and a free trial download =)

AVG anti-virus is one of the best i know of, use multiple ones though as one program will not catch 'em all, I personally use AVG along with spybot search and destroy and trojanhunter. All are free-ware programs but they do take donations below are links to some of the programs websites
http://avg.downloadzsoftware.com/?OVRAW=AVG%20anti-virus&OVKEY=avg%20anti%20virus&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=4009771522&OVKWID=35362029022
you can always yahoo search this stuff to and find alot more places to DL. you need to use more then 1 program cause there is no such program out there that can detect everything

Man - you got some bad answers here from poor AV like AVG to rogue AV like stop sign.
If you wish to paid for a AV then the best is Nod32 2nd best is Bitdefender or kaspersky.
http://www.eset.com/
http://www.kaspersky.com/
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/
If you want the best free AV then it has to be AVS.

I use avg free anti virus its excellent. I have mine set to auto update every time the PC is booted (it only takes seconds and the virus patterns are always up to date) I'm not too keen on the fire wall so I use the zone alarm fire wall, this is also free and very good. both are free to update as often as needed. and as an upgrade comes out this is done automatically
