I have a CA Drivers License and most states don't know the different between a DL and a state ID. I haven't had any trouble getting into bars in FL, TX, OK, AZ, KS, MO, NY, SC, GA and Hawaii.

Any business has the right to refuse service to anyone. A driver's license is not a drinking license, no matter what state it's issued from. It's uncommon for a bar to refuse out of state ID's; most likely the bouncer made a judgement call about the validity of the ID in question, and explained his decision poorly.

No, to drink in a bar in California you MUST have a valid ID issued by the State of California.

this is a really good question. and i am really not sure. i think it is not legal but i dont know who would enforce it. The privileges and immunities clause of the constitution plus the bars having to be licensed by the state may lead they to be able to accept out of state liscenses.
people who said they can deny anyone is clearly wrong cant deny on basis of race religion, ethnicity, or disability.

A bar is not required to let you in or serve you at all. They have complete control over who is allowed in and who is not.
