Recently, I have been trying to recover a source code file that was removed from the recycle bin about a month to 2 months ago. I know that it is still existant on the computer but how can I recover it and what are the chances that by this time it has deteriorated beyond repair meaning rescuing it is pointless?

Possible yes, likely no. The reason being that since you deleted the file all you really did was set the space that the file took up on your hard drive as free again. Since the time you deleted it information could have been written over that sector or sectors of your hard drive that the data was stored on. While recovering after that has occurred may be possible, it would only be possible by a data recovery expert and would cost you a pretty penny.

Hope this helps

It will not be there the next day, let alone months later, Once something is removed from the recycle bin it's space is used by anything else that comes along, including temporary files. This can happen immediately it is removed, and so it gets over-written. Otherwise your disk would rapidly fill up.

By now it is highly unlikely that you will be able to recover the file. It depends on how fragmented your hard drive is, how much free space you have, how much you use the computer, and a few other factors, but it isn't very likely that you will be able to recover a the file.

If you're still willing to give it a shot, try using Undelete Plus [ http://www.undelete-plus.com/ ] to recover the files. I've had some good experiences with it.

it's possible to recover any file but that doesn't mean it's going to be in good enough shape to do it.
so when you delete a file all it does is take the first letter off of the file so if you know the name of the file then you will know what the first letter is

It is highly unlikely the file is at all recoverable. Without going into the boring details of how a hard drive records data, I'll just say that it has long since most likely been overwritten.

Not from the recycle bin

If you have a back up from way back you may be able to do it if you are lucky.

never, you can't get it back, unless you have saved it by back up, earlier, just forget and find other means to find it!
