If it's covered in contract, you can get the landlord to exterminate via a 'bomb'...usually in the attic where spiders lay their eggs, and through perimeter treatment. You can also suggest to the landlord to have the gardener cut back on vegetation that is too close to the property. While you are at it, mention to the landlord that the building foundation block must be exposed (not covered in vegetation or buried in soil) so as to prevent termite infestation...this will show him/her that you are concerned about the property.

If it's in the contract then yes, get your landlord to take care of it. And I know it sounds disgusting, but spiders can be good for keeping other insects out off your apartment (but not if there is a massive amount of them).
