Janet Hubert apparenlty violated her contract by getting pregnant. Although her pregnancy was written into the show with the result of the birth of Nicky, Janet reportedly had problems working with Will Smith so she was fired and Daphne Maxwell Reid played the part for the remainder of the show's run.

I assume they changed the actress because of contract and salary issues.
